In the early 1800’s, Matthews was unofficially known as ‘Stumptown’ (allegedly because so many tree stumps were left when making way for farms), then called Fullwood (after the area postmaster, circa 1870’s) before being incorporated in 1879 and named Matthews after the director of the Central Carolina Railroad (later Seaboard Air Line Railroad).

Situated approximately 11 miles southeast of uptown Charlotte, Matthews has a historic downtown area bustling with shops, restaurants, cafes and an incredible Farmer’s Market. Enjoy the great outdoors with walking trails, parks, and the Sportsplex at Matthews. During Summer, the downtown area hosts multiple outdoor events and local festivals. Close to major shopping districts, schools, and medical facilities.

Known for its larger home lot size, schools and scenic outdoors lifestyle, there’s plenty to do here! Enjoy Fall activities from hayrides to a petting zoo at the popular Hunter Farm, visit the historical Adam Ivy House one of the oldest buildings in Weddington, or enjoy some of the areas restaurants.

Nestled about 15 miles south of Charlotte, Indian Trail offers an abundance of family and outdoor activities! Dating back to the 1700’s, Waxhaw abounds with small town charm, and has a rich local culture and history (this is one of the towns embroiled in the ongoing debate over the birthplace of Andrew Jackson, 7th President of the United States). Enjoy the historic downtown area shops, restaurants and self-guided walking tour.  World class golf, fishing, kayaking and boating at Cane Creek Park are just some of the local outdoor activities. Finish your day with a trip to a local day spa or coffee and a pastry at Crossroads.
